The key to keeping your pet in top shape
Intestinal worms
Parasites that live in your pet’s intestines, these “worms” can cause a variety of nasty problems; from weight loss to severe diarrhoea or even death. Puppies and kittens are at particular risk.
Regular worming is important, not only for your furry friend, but for humans too. Especially if your dog or cat gives you kisses! Some worms are transmitted by fleas, although most release tiny eggs into your pet’s poo. Don’t forget to wash your hands after cleaning the cat’s litter-tray, or picking up the dog poo!

Heartworm
Heartworm is a disease that nightmares are made of! Spread by mosquitoes, the worms can grow up to 30cm long and become lodged in your dog’s heart, eventually causing heart failure and death.
Heartworm has recently been found in foxes on the Mornington Peninsula., so it’s only a matter of time until it’s in our dogs too.
Luckily, although treating heartworm is hard, preventing it is easy! We recommend an injection that protects your dog all year, and usually give it at their annual health check., There are other options too, so just ask..
Note that intestinal “all wormer” tablets do NOT protect against heartworm.
Fleas
Fleas are the most common external parasite that we find on dogs and cats locally. Even a single flea bite can cause trouble; intense itching, hair loss, skin changes or allergies. They can even transmit worms to your dog.
There are many options for preventing fleas – but they’re not all equal. Ask us to to tailor your pet’s parasite prevention programme .
BEWARE – not all dog treatments are safe for cats!
Paralysis ticks
Although, thankfully, rare on the Mornington Peninsula; it is important to be aware of this killer.
Ticks attach to the skin to feed on your pet’s blood, but inject a toxin that causes muscle paralysis. Sometimes the first sign is a changed bark, but if untreated the condition will progress to collapse and eventually death as the muscles used for breathing are affected.
A number of preventatives are now available to protect your pet from ticks – we’re happy to advise you.
